Artwork featured on BBC4 Beauty of Anatomy part 5 10th September 2014 @8.30pm

The world’s most famous study of the human body is Gray’s Anatomy. The accuracy of the descriptions and the stark beauty of the illustrations made it an instant bestseller. Adam Rutherford tells the story of how, in just three years, Dr Henry Gray and Dr Henry Carter put it together based on dissections they personally performed.
A new 5 part series for BBC4 called the Beauty of Anatomy which covers anatomical artwork from Galen and Da Vinci up to Gray’s Anatomy.  The series is being presented by Dr Adam Rutherford and explores the relationship between science and art.  At the end of our episode on Gray’s Anatomy we talk briefly about how that relationship between science and art continues today, with artists now working with modern ways of visualising the body such as scans, microscopes, DNA etc.
